『新增東國輿地勝覽』(경상도 편)이 갖는 自然地理 硏究資料的 意義

A Study on Physical Geographical Meaning of Sinjeung Donggukyeojiseungram’s Chapter on Gyeongsang-do

조선왕조는 건국 후 지리지 편찬의 중요성을 인식하여 간행사업을 추진하였다. 『신증동국여지승람』은 1481년에 완성된 『동국여지승람』을 수정, 보완하여 1530년에 간행되었다. 『신증동국여지승람』은 각 행정구역별 지리, 역사, 행정, 경제, 문화, 사회 등에 관련된 내용을 풍부하게 담고 있어, 오늘날 지리를 비롯한 관련 분야의 연구에 기본 자료의 하나로 평가되고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 『신증동국여지승람』의 경상도편의 내용 중에 자연지리적 요소와 관련된 기록이 갖는 연구 자료적 의의를 밝히는 것이다. 자연지리적 요소는 크게 지형, 기후(기상), 식생으로 구분하였다. 연구결과 『신증동국여지승람』의 경상도편에는 지형, 기후, 식생 등과 관련된 내용이 적지 않으며, 이 중에는 15~16세기 경상도의 자연환경을 복원, 추정할 수 있는 구체적인 기록도 어렵지 않게 발견되었다. 이 같은 연구결과는 기존의 거의 모든 연구자들이 『신증동국여지승람』을 인문지리서로 평가, 강조하고 있는 현실과는 거리감이 있는 것이다. 아울러 고문헌도 자연지리와 관련된 연구자료로 폭넓고 광범위하게 활용될 수도 있음을 시사하는 것이다.

The Joseon-Dynasty, after its foundation, was made aware of the importance of compiling geographical books, and pushed for their publication. Sinjeung-Donggukyeojiseungram was published in 1530, after Donggukyeojiseungram, completed in 1481, was amended. Sinjeung-Donggukyeojiseungramfeatures ample details on administrative units’ geography, history, administration, economy, culture, society etc., and is considered an important source for today’s research on then geography and other fields. The purpose of this research is to determine the research significance of Sinjeung-Donggukyeojiseungram, Chapter on Gyeongsang-do(Province), in connection with its physical geographical elements records. Physical geographical elements are categorized as landforms, climateㆍweather, and vegetation. The research result indicated that not a few descriptions of Sinjeung-Donggukyeojiseungram, Chapter on Gyeongsang-do, are related to landforms, climateㆍweather, and vegetation, and of these, numerous specific detailed descriptions were also discovered to enable one to restore and estimate environment of Gyeongsang-do of 15th~16th centuries. This research result is different from the fact that existing researchers evaluated Sinjeung Donggukyeojiseungram as descriptive human geography books. Also, the research suggests that an old book as well can be widely used as research source on physical geography.
