This study aims to address the opinions of students and teachers on English by analyzing questionnaire and also to evaluate English speaking abilities of elementary school students. To carry out the survey, 100 teachers and 40 sixth grade students were selected and grading item categories such as pronunciation, grammatical accuracy, adoption of communicative functions, speech fluency, attitude in activities and grading criteria were set up. Grading levels were defined as high(2.5-3), medium(1.5-2.49), and low(0.1-1.49). The results were as follows: First, the students' speaking abilities were 1.57 of mean as the medium. Second, the students were graded highest in attitude, next in communicative functions, fluency, pronunciation, and last in accuracy of speech. Third, the students scored higher in the communicative functions of greetings and wish, while they scored lower in the communicative functions of comparisons, describing or questioning experiences. To help students improve their speaking abilities, teachers employ student-centered and interactive activities along with providing students with opportunitics to study with native English speakers.
