How to use 'testimony' in the studies of North Korean Women

본 논문은 어떤 자료를 통해 북한 여성 연구를 할 것인가라는 물음을 바탕으로, 북한여성 연구에서 북한 이주민의 증언의 자료로서의 가치를 살펴보고, 증언이 자료로서 활용 될 수 있는 조건을 모색하였다. 북한 이주민의 증언은, 증언이 놓여 있는 맥락에 대한 이해, 증언의 내용에서 해석과 있는 그대로의 사실 구분, 증언에 사용된 언어에 대한 이해 등을 통해 자료로 활용할 수 있다. 북한 이주민의 증언을 자료로 재구성하는 과정은 구체적인 북한 여성인 삶을 드러내는 과정이며, 이를 통해 북한 여성에 대한 새로운 물음을 구성해낼 수 있다는 점에서 유의미하다.

What type of material should be considered appropriate for studying the lives of North Korean women? If we are to overcome the limits of the available material, and set the ground for questioning the predicament of women in North Korea, we need to reexamine the value of the 'testimony' as material. The testimony of North Korean migrants potentially holds a promise of revealing multiple social realities that women in North Korea experience. In order to harvest this knowledge, we need to understand accurately the societal context of a testimony, ability to differentiate the objective reality and subjective interpretation, and understanding the hidden meaning of language used. Currently, the testimony has been viewed skeptically for a lack of credibility and applicability. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the 'testimony' by asking, "Under what condition should we use the 'testimony' as credible research material?" First, for the purpose of utilizing the 'testimony', we need to consider why, how, and by whom the 'testimony' is prevailing. Second, we need to grasp between interpretation and assumption. Third, it is necessary to understand the refugee's language used in the 'testimony.' Considering these factors, the 'testimony' as material may open a way to overcome the established matrial and set the foundation for a new agenda in researching North Korean women.
