원불교 정녀(貞女)제도와 성적 통제

The Female Clergy System of Won-Buddhism and the Control of Sexuality

본 연구는 원불교에서 여성들이 교역자인 '교무'가 되기 위해서는 미혼의 독신이어야 한다는 것을 규범화한 '정녀제도'가 여성교무의 성을 통제·관리하는 장치가 되고 있는 것에 문제의식을 갖고 출발한다. 따라서 성평등한 교리와 제도를 가지고 있는 원불교 교단에서 어떻게 '정녀제도'를 통해 여성교무에 대한 성적 통제가 이루어지고 있는지를 살펴보고 성통제의 재생산 요인들을 분석하였다. 전통 종교들에서 가부장적 남성들이 여성의 몸과 섹슈얼리티를 남성들과의 이해관계에 따라 규정하고 다루어 왔던 방식은 오늘날 원불교 교단에서 정녀제도를 통해 드러나는 성적 통제의 방식과 유사하다. 그러므로 정녀제도의 개선은 교단 내의 일임과 동시에 서로 다른 종교들과 간문화적으로 소통되면서 그들 종교들의 여성 관련 교리 및 제도의 외연에 충격을 주는 교호작용을 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

This paper examines the 'female clergy system' of Won-Buddhism which dictates that 'female clergy' be unmarried, single women, and argues that this system is used to control these women's sexuality. First, it examines how controlling women's sexuality has come about within Won-Buddhism despite the fact that gender equality is a central tenet of their teaching and beliefs. Second, it analyzes various factors that reproduce control of sexuality. The 'female clergy system' as a way of controlling women's sexuality within Won-Buddhism is similar to the ways that other traditional religions control women's bodies and sexuality. Thus, this paper argues that reform of the 'female clergy system' is needed within Won-Buddhism. These reforms are expected to bring about a ripple effect in other religious organizations regarding their own teaching and practices related to women.
