일제 말기 김활란의 일제 협력 배경과 논리

Reconsidering Helen Kim : the Background and Logic of Her Cooperation with the Japanese

본 연구는 민족주의를 기준으로 김활란의 일제 협력 행위를 평가해 왔던 기존 담론에 대한 여성주의적 문제제기 중 하나이다. 본 연구에서는 그가 식민지 시기의 지식인 '여성'이었다는 점과 그에게 '성별화된 협력의 논리'가 있었다는 점에 주목하여 일제 협력 배경과 그 과정에서 구성한 내적 논리를 밝혔다. 1937년부터 시작된 김활란의 일제 협력은 식민지 조선 사회에서 기독교계 인사들을 제외하고는 지원 세력이 거의 없었던 그의 현실에서 기인하였다. 그리고 그는 여성의 사회진출을 내세웠던 일제의 전쟁 동원 논리에 일말의 희망을 걸고 일제에 협력하였다. 그러나 1940년대 전쟁 말기로 접어들면서 그의 이러한 희망은 실현불가능한 것이 되었음에도 불구하고 전쟁협력을 멈추지 못하였던 김활란은 자기모순의 고통을 경험하게 되었다.

This paper is a feminist critique of the existing discourse that evaluates Helen Kim's life and activities within the discourse of nationalist historiography. Unlike the previous studies criticizing Helen Kim for her collaborations with Japanese Imperialism, this paper approaches her life with the question, why did she collaborate with the Japanese imperialists from the mid-1930s to 1945. In doing so, the paper pays attention to the fact that Helen Kim was an intellectual woman during Japanese colonial period and she had her own "gendered logic for cooperating with Japanese."
