This is a case study on achievement motivation of women professors in a women's University in Korea. The main purpose of the study is to point out the essential factor of achievement motivation of women professors. In order to carry out the purpose, 12 women professors of a women's university were selected as the subjects. All the subjects were interviewed individually by the researcher. The important topics of the interview were on family dynamics and personal experiences of the subjects. The format and content of this study were based on Women and Success: The Anatomy of Achievement, edited by Ruth Kundsin, published in 1974, in New York. Because of the unique purpose, the criteria of the selection of the subjects were rather strict. The followings are some selection criteria. 1) All subjects are on their mid-forties, generally mid-forties means psycho-logical maturation. 2) All subjects are married normally (here, normal marriage means first marriage for husband and wife), and have children while they pursue. their career. 3) All subjects are in University faculty members for more than 10 years. The followings are some of the main conclusions drawn from the interviews. 1) Besides their effort for self-actualization, parental supports from both fathers and mothers were imperative for developing the confidence and self-esteem needed to prepare for a career. A husband's support is essential later in life. In sum, the supports by parents, husband and siblings are. consistent and positive, and the whole family was both proud and concerned with their successes. Through these facts, it is possible to establish the following formula. 1) Achievement motivation of women professors = Efforts for self-actualization of individual + supports from parents, husband and family + appropriate timing. 2) Strugglings for a successful career of women professors in a women's university were rather less competitive. It means that competitions among same sex is less keen compared to the situation with opposite sex. But it can be said that all subjects have intensely developed and achieved their unique aptitude in their own way up to the personal growth. 3) There is little multi-role conflicts among the subjects. This is caused by the psychological inhibition of professional women. But it can be assumed easily that the result is based on their tremendous efforts to overcome the obstacles on their way of successful career. On account of the particular subjects, this case study has limitations to understand the achievement motivation of Korean women professors in general.
