Changes and Development in Korean Women's Lives in the Late Chosun Period 1876-1910

This paper is an attempt to trace the changing phases of Korean women's traditional lives resulting from the mass influx of modernization in all systems. and across all walks of life, spanning from 1876 when the Chosun Kingdom was opened up to the outside world, to 1910 when the kingdom was replaced by Japanese colonial rule. Women's liberation from virtual domestic imprisonment and the drastic changes realized in women's lives through their active participation in social activities are documented, together with the changes in women's domestic labor due to the introduction of previously unseen foreign products. A wide range of references, records and documents of missionaries, diplomats and travelers have been used, supported by government documents, diaries of government officials, and the Japanese documents of commerce and business.
