J. White's View of Personal Autonomy in Education

  • 114

The purpose of this essay is to understand clearly J. White's view of personal autonomy in education and to explore its educational implications. His view of autonomy has changed from the emphasis on rationality to the emphasis on desires-satisfaction. Lately he counts personal well-being as informed desires-satisfaction. In this conception of well-being, personal autonomy plays a role for the promotion of personal well-being. J. White defenses personal autonomy as an aim of education in liberal democratic state. For liberal state ought to be neutral with regard to different conceptions of well-being. He argues for stronger sense of personal autonomy than weaker sense of one. The difference between them is that the stronger sense, but not weaker, requires critical reflectiveness about basic social structures. J. White's view makes sense in terms of arguing substansial education for personal autonomy. He insists that education for autonomy must be rooted in the cultivation of a number of altruistic disposition. In this context, he points early education for the cultivation of dispositions. J. White's view of personal autonomy in education has crucial meanings in terms of that it overcomes or complements the limits of rationalist autonomy.
