The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, it is to help the English teachers recognize the importance of appropriate techniques for an effective class. Secondly, it is to draw professionals’ attention to what the English teachers do in their intended-to-be CLT classes and request their efforts to provide the necessary help. Lastly, it is to call for teacher training, supervision, and other administrative support that can help the teachers develop appropriate techniques necessary to enhance the effectiveness of their classes. For these purposes the paper first describes the weaknesses revealed in the observation of nine middle school English classes, focusing on the teacher techniques. It then introduces some examples of the techniques, for each of which an analysis of the weaknesses is provided along with some comments that the teacher might have to consider in order to improve class effectiveness. It is argued that the teachers’ use of inappropriate techniques results mainly from lack of knowledge and training. Suggestions are made for the development of appropriate techniques, which are considered to be crucial in enhancing class effectiveness.
