This study aims to describe what it takes to teach speech acts in formal instruction. With all the theoretical studies and empirical researches on speech acts and interlanguage pragmatics, the planning and implementation of lessons on speech acts appear to be quite straightforward. However, the formal instruction of fine tuning of the students’ linguistic behavior in the target language has been attempted only recently and the instructors often face various difficulties in the practice of teaching from setting the teaching goal to evaluating the students’ sociolinguistic competence. Based on her own experience of teaching speech acts, the researcher discusses issues and difficulties in formal instruction, focusing on the act of complimenting and apologizing. As a way to overcome those difficulties, the researcher makes a few suggestions and specifies the tasks remained to both instructors and applied linguists. This study also emphasizes that teaching materials should be constructed and presented for the ultimate goal of sensitizing the contextually appropriate ways of speaking and that classroom activities should also be incorporated to achieve this goal.
