An exploration for developing effective English learning software through interactive speech recognition program

The purpose of this study is to explore effective ways to develop English learning software through speech recognition program. To achieve this purpose, this paper outlines the necessities and problems of the software with the current technology for English learning in EFL environment. Next, the operational principles of speech recognition program are delineated. Then, the characteristics and contents of speech recognition software developed by the authors are briefly described. In this software, five story themes are included such as main street, fashion house, history museum, star’s house, and ghost land, each of which is designed for studying English through interaction using speech recognition program between language learners and computers. Each theme contains three steps, such as model dialogue, main dialogue, and games. It is also designed for language learners to control the level of configuration through which language beginners can adjust themselves into this software according to their language proficiency. Finally, some guidelines for developing future software using speech recognition program will be suggested based on the information which was elicited through the process of designing, developing, and evaluating of the authors’ collaborative work along with the previous research.
