고전은 어떻게 ‘실용화’되는가? - 영어권의 경우를 중심으로

How the Classic Becomes ‘Practical"?: The Case of English-Speaking World

  고전이 살고 진정한 의미에서 ‘실용화’ 되려면 우선 신뢰성 있는 번역이 나와 독자에게 다가갈 수 있어야 한다. 서양의 경우, 그리스 로마 고전은 롭 고전문고가, 르네상스 고전은 이 타티 문고가 최고 수준의 현대적 영어번역을 지속적으로 제공함으로써 독자들과 고전 세계를 서로 이어주고 있다. 여기에다, ‘페르세우스 디지털 문고’가 인터넷 고전문고의 역할을 수행한다. 고전이 실용화되는 것은, 학자들에 의한 비판 번역본 출간, 중간 필자에 의한 고쳐쓰기, 그리고 완전한 대중화라는 세 단계를 밟는다. 이는 원전→번역→가공의 단계로 압축해 말할 수 있다. 고전을 살리는 길은 바로 이러한 단계들, 특히 원전 번역과 가공 과정이 원활하게 이루어지는 데 있다. 이를 위해 학계와 출판사 사이에 중간필자를 키우는 고전출판 아카데미 같은 산학협동체가 필요하다.

  For reviving and in a genuine sense ‘practicing" the classic, first of all the reliable modern translations must be continuously appeared. Among some exemplars of those in the English-speaking World, there stand Loeb Classical Library, I Tatti Renaissance Library, Perseus Digital Library, etc. The classic becomes practical through such three stages as translation, rewriting, and lastly popularization. To trod these courses well, we might have to get such an institute as the ‘Publication Academy for the Classic."
