  시각문화는 서구에서도 새로운 분야이며 연구대상이 변화되고 진화하고 있는 것이다. 독립된 단일 학문이 아니고 다양한 학문이나 방법론을 차용한 집합체로서 혼성적이고, 상호학제적(Cross-Disciplinary, 또는 Multi-Disciplinary) 혹은 다학문적(Inter-Disciplinary)이며, 종합적인 형식인 학과간 협동과정의 성격을 가지고 있다. 시각문화에 대한 연구는 연구자에 따라서 조금씩 그 연구의 장이 다르다. 시각이미지를 중심대상으로 한 학문에 대한 도전은 복잡하고 다가가기 힘들다. 시각문화 영역의 입장에서 미술사를 연구하고, 시각문화의 한 개념을 정의하기 위해 미의 관념이나 미학적 의미론에만 의지할 수는 없다. 전문적이며 전통적인 이미지와 대중적인 이미지는 고려되어야 한다. 이점에서 시각문화 커리큘럼 내용의 분류, 기술의 순서, 표준적인 읽기, 논제들을 교육학적인 리얼리티로 구성하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 이 글에서는 시각문화의 연구자들 중에서 용어적 개념과 영역 그리고 개론적인 소개를 중심으로 한 존 A. 워커와 사라 채플린(John A. Walker and Sarah Chaplin), 인문학과 교육적인 접근을 하고 있는 W.J.T. 미첼(W.J.T. Mitchell), 미술사와 정치사회학적인 연구를 하는 니콜라스 미르조에프(Nicholas Mirzoeff), 그리고 시각문화에 대한 사회학적인 읽기를 하고 있는 크리스 젠크스(Chris Jenks)를 주요 연구자로 다루며, 각자의 연구영역과 인식론에 대하여 소개를 하였다. 그 이외의 연구자와 주요 영역은 다른 장을 마련하여 간략하게 다루었다.

  Among the revolution in higher education in the last twenty-five years has been an explosion of interest in visual culture The most obvious evidence of the development has been the emergence of studies in film, television, and mass culture, alongside a new social/political/communicational order that employs mass spectacle and technologies of visual and auditory simulation in radically new ways. But there have been less-public developments as well in the sphere of the professional study of culture.   The emergence of a new hybrid discipline called "visual culture" may be a bit too easy, given the current meteoric career of something called "cultural studies". One simply attaches "the visual" to the "cultural" and everything follows. On the other hand, one shouldn"t underestimate the resistance of traditional disciplines to cross-disciplinary or interdisciplinary poaching.   What sort of curriculum, sequence of skills, canonical readings, and issues will emerge to make visual culture a pedagogical reality is, at this point, an open question. there is no systematic critique of visual culture on which to construct a curriculum or even a syllabus, much less a discipline.
