서예에 있어서의 실용성과 예술성이 표리일체의 관계에 있음은 동양의 문자 특성상, 그리고 오랜 전통상 필연적인 결과였다. 실용성과 직결되면서 예술로 발전되어 온 서예교육의 특성, 즉 서예의 주체가 되는 문자가 단순한 부호의 표기에 머무는 것이 아니라, 예술적인 발전을 거듭해 왔다는 사실을 재인식함으로써, 서예교육 현장에 있어서도 서예의 본질적인 기능인 실용성과 예술성이 함께 확장될 수 있도록 고려되어야 할 필요가 있겠다. 이를 위해서, 본 연구는 서예의 실용성과 심미성이라는 본질적이고도 양립적인 기능에 대한 고찰과 더불어 전통적으로 서예에 깃든 정신성의 문제를 되짚어 봄으로써 서예교육의 본질과 특성을 명확히 하고, 이를 통해 향후 서예교육의 바람직한 향방을 조망하고자 한다.
The review of calligraphy essence based on the fact will be able to suggest remarkably to establish the direction of calligraphy education in the school education. Therefore, this paper focused on one or more arguing points based on the artistic and literal values of calligraphy, investigated the essence of calligraphy, and so reviewed the fundamental problem of art and the prospect of calligraphy education in the school education. As a result, this paper shows the followings: artistic universality and peculiarity of calligraphy, and scientific investigation and definite theory investigation in the essence of calligraphy.
