The Origination and Formation Background of the Goguryeo Dynasty Roof Tiles

&nbsp;&nbsp;필자는 고구려 기와와 와당의 발생과정 그리고 그 형성 배경에 대한 추론을 통하여 고구려기와의 기원을 ？？三國史記？？기사에 보이는 신라기와보다 이른 시기로 비정하였다. 또 고구려의 기와 사용은 고구려 시조 전승의 내용에 반영되어 있는 것으로 상정하였다. 즉, 태조왕대 고구려가 본격적으로계루부 중심의 왕위 세습체제를 정비하고 시조전승을 확립하였으며, 이무렵 중국？낙랑과의 접촉을 통해 경제적인 부를 축적하여 고대국가의 기틀을 마련하였다. 고구려의 발전은 중국과 동등한 수준의 문화 수용의지를 촉발시켰고 축적되었던 토제품의 생산기술을 바탕으로 자체적인 기와 생산이 가능하였다고 추정하였다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;이어 등장한 와당의 출현 시기는 적어도 太寧4年(326) 이전에 발생한 것으로 추정되는데 당시의 권운문 와당에서 중국이나 한사군의 영향보다는 독자적인 문양과 제작방식이 확인된다. 즉, 고구려인들은 북조세력과의 대결이 소강상태로 접어드는 봉상왕 재위 무렵 안정된 사회분위기와 강력한 왕권을 바탕으로 독자적인 권운문 와당과 특수기와를 만들어 낼 수 있었다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;이와 같은 고구려 와당은 일찍부터 확립된 도교와 전통신앙의 결합된 사상체계에 바탕을 두고 있으며, 와당의 표면에 陰陽의 氣가 흐르는 것을 표현한 권운문과 五方, 天圓地方을 상징하는 구획선으로 정형화 되었던 것이다. 한편, 연화문 수막새의 발생시점은 왕실에 의해 불교가 적극적으로 장려되는 고국양왕대로 보았다.

In other words, independent production of roof tiles was possible in the times of King Taejo(太祖王) based on the advanced social foundation with long-accumulated earthenware production technology. As for Maksae, the production time of snail-patterned Maksae was suspected at least to be before the 4th year of Taenyung(太寧四年, A.D. 326). It was noted that snail-patterned Maksae at that time had unique patterns and the production methods differed from those of China. The people of the Goguryeo Dynasty made unique snail-patterned Maksae and special-purpose roof tiles based on a stable atmosphere in the society and the strong power of King Bongsang(烽上王) when there were few conflicts with Northern foreign nations.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;In order to determine from what social background the Goguryeo&quot;s Maksae were made, both the pattern structure of the Maksae and thesocial background were investigated. The philosophy system of the Goguryeo Dynasty was Taoism combined with traditional religions. Thus, the patterns of Maksae were set, snail-shaped, expressing the flow of Yin(陰) and Yang(陽), and the lines symbolizing every direction of the world. It appears that a lotus-pattern emerged during the times of King Gogukyang(故國壤王) when Buddhism was actively encouraged.
