근ㆍ현대 일본의 연애 사정: ‘한류’(韓流) 열풍의 배경

The Concept of “Pure Love”(Platonic Love) in Modern Japan

  2000년대 들어서 일본에서는 세대를 초월한 ‘순애’ 붐이 일어나고 있다. 소설, 코믹스(연재만화), 영화, TV 드라마와 복수의 미디어를 횡단하며 볼 수 있는 이러한 붐이 한국 드라마 〈겨울연가(후유노 소나타)〉의 대히트를 계기로 이어지고 있는 ‘한류’ 붐과 연관되어 있는 것은 분명하다. 그러나 일본에 있어서의 ‘순애’ 붐은 새로운 현상은 아니다. 오히려 일본에 있어서의 ‘근대적 연애’는 정신성이 높은 ‘순애’의 발견에서 시작되었다고 할 수 있다. 그것은 근세까지의 육체적 연애에 대한 안티테제이며, ‘순애’의 고상함이 여성의 ‘순결’에 의해서만 보증된다고 하는 사고방식을 유포하여, ‘순애’를 둘러싼 이중규범을 만들어냈다. 그 후, 연애ㆍ성애ㆍ결혼의 삼위일체에 의한 로맨틱 이데올로기가 정착되었으나, 전후에는 이러한 삼위일체가 붕괴되었다. 특히 젊은 세대의 성에 대한 사고방식은 이전과 크게 달라졌다. 본 논문에서는 이와 같은 연애관의 변천과 현대 일본의 젊은 세대에게서 나타나는 경향을 살펴보았다.

  “Pure love” (Platonic love) has been in vogue among Japanese of all generations since 2000. This trend observed in novels, comics, films, TV dramas, and other media is related to the “Korean style” boom in Japan, which was triggered by a smash hit of the Korean drama serial “Winter Sonata.” The fever for “pure love” is, however, not a recent phenomenon in Japan. Rather, the Japanese modern view of “love” originated with the discovery of spiritual “pure love” which was antithetical to the pre-modern physical-centered love. This currency, on the other hand, established the double standard for “love” in Japan, allotting its spiritual phase to women (female chastity) and its physical one to men (male carnality). Institutionally, the ideology of romantic love is consummated by modern monogamy, that is, the trinity of romance, sexual love, and marriage. After WWII, this trinity has gradually disintegrated with the transformation of people’s view of sexuality. In this article, the shift in the Japanese view of love in the modern era is traced, referring as well to the recent tendencies found in younger people in Japan.
