중등 미술교육의 목적과 의미에 관한 철학적 논의 - ‘미술을 통한 교육’의 역사적 기원과 철학적 배경을 바탕으로

Critical Reflection on the Purpose and the Meaning of Secondary Art Education through Historical Review of the Philosophy ‘Education through Art’

  오늘날 입시 위주의 교육제도로 인한 교육적 병폐를 겪고 있는 우리나라 중등 교육의 현실에서, 미술 교과교육은 주변교과로서 그 정당성을 갖기 어려운 상황이다. 근대화의 시작과 함께 성립된 학교 미술교육의 변화된 양상을 고찰할 때, 중등 미술교육은 다변하는 시대적 상황에 휘말리며 학교 교육의 본질적 목적과 의미를 벗어나 교육적 정당성을 찾으려하는 양상들을 쉽게 발견할 수 있다. 특히 학교 미술교육의 목적과 의미에 관한 철학적 기원과 역사적 배경을 통해 현재 우리가 안고 있는 중등 미술교육의 문제들을 재고해 볼 때, 오늘날 청소년(중ㆍ고등학생)들에게 왜 미술을 가르쳐야 하는가에 대한 교육의 본질적 목적에 대한 철학적 성찰의 부재를 자각하게 된다. 20세기 초 산업화된 자본주의 사회의 병폐를 교육으로 해결하고자 했던 존 듀이(Dewey, J.)는 오늘날 미술이라는 교과를 통해 학생들이 어떤 교육적 성과를 가질 수 있는가에 대한 끊임없는 비판적 검토의 필요성을 일깨워준다. 21세기를 사는 오늘날까지 그 영향력을 가지는 허버트 리드(Read, H.)의 철학, ‘미술을 통한 교육’은 미술 자체를 위한 교육이 아닌 교육의 본질적 목적을 위해 학교에서 미술을 가르쳐야 할 정당성에 대한 철학적 기초를 제공해준다. 따라서 본고는 ‘미술을 통한 교육’의 역사적 기원과 철학적 배경을 통해 중등 미술교육에서 간과되기 쉬운 교육의 본질적 측면에서 분석하고 검토함으로써, 오늘날 중등학교에서 학생들에게 미술이라는 교과를 가르치고 배워야 할 정당한 목적과 의미에 대한 타당한 논의를 제공한다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;This paper exams the purpose and the meaning of secondary art education for today through the philosophical research of ‘Education through Art’. There have been some problems in the secondary education focused on entering for universities in Korea. Under this conditions, secondary art education has had difficulty in finding the educational value. If we should teach to all students art in secondary school as well as in elementary level, we have to question why we should teach to students art in secondary schools and to exam the purpose and the meaning continually.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Dewey asserted that we have to question what experiential outcomes can get through art. As a philosophical lesson for art education, Read&quot;s ‘Education through Art’ has most influenced school art education and has provided the fundamental direction even in the twentieth century. Therefore, the historical review of the philosophy ‘Education through art’ provides an opportunity to analyse the current problems in secondary schools and to find an direction toward those solutions. This philosophical reflection about the purpose and the meaning of art education aims to re-exam educational objectives why art should be teach to students in secondary school today.
