박물관 전시물의 개념 변화와 전시물 기반 학습의 적용

Paradigm Shift in Museum Objects and Implications for Object-Based Learning

  박물관 교육의 요체는 박물관이 수장하고 제시하는 전시물(사물, object)에 있다. 오랫동안 박물관은 전시물의 진정성(authenticity)에 높은 가치를 두고 작품/유물 자체의 내재적 특질을 부각하는데 주안점을 두었다. 그러나 20세기 후반부터 전시물의 의미가 그 자체의 내재적 특질에 의해 드러나는 것이 아니라, 그것을 경험하는 관람자와의 상호작용 속에서 구성되는 것이라는 인식이 주요 흐름으로 자리 잡게 되었다. 이른바 ‘사물기반 인식론’(object-based epistemology)에서 ‘사물기반 담론(object-based discourse)으로 박물관 패러다임이 전환됨에 따라 박물관 전시물의 가치체계와 범위에도 변화가 초래되고 있다. 원본성과 우수성에 준하여 선별되던 박물관 전시물은 이제 관람자의 의미있는 경험과 학습을 촉진하는 역할에 준하여 그 자치를 평가받게 되었다. 이에 따라 실물/원본 전시물(authentic object)뿐 아니라 다양한 재현적 전시물(representational object)이 박물관 전시에 도입되고 있으며, 이러한 새로운 유형의 전시물이 지니는 교육적 의미와 가치에 대한 실증적 연구는 이제 막 시작단계에 있다. 이 연구에서는 박물관 전시물의 개념 변화에 대한 이론적 고찰과 함께 최근에 열린 국내 미술관의 전시를 사례로 재현적 전시물과 실물/원본 전시물에 대한 관람자의 경험과 반응을 탐색하고, 교육적 시사점을 모색해 본다.

  The purpose of this study is to examine paradigm shift in museum objects and its implications for object-based learning in museums. Traditionally, an object"s authenticity has been highly valued in museums and its natural traits and intrinsic values have been believed to reveal special meaning to the viewers. The so called ‘object-based epistemology’ represents the main philosophy of museum objects of the late 19th century and the early 20th century that valued natural aspects of authentic objects. However, as the postmodern perspective recognizes diverse perspectives of individual visitors and reexamine the absolute authenticity of museum objects, museums came to accept the notion that objects were important with respect to their role in supporting meaningful experience and learning of visitors. In this "object-based discourse" paradigm of the late 20th century, the concept and scope of museum objects have expanded to incorporate representational, non-authentic objects in museum exhibitions. This study treats the theoretical aspects of this paradigm shift and presents the result of empirical research on an art museum exhibition, to examine visitor experience of authentic and representational objects. Based on this research, educational implications are proposed.
