Wonhyo and Lao-Zhuang Thought

  Wonhyo frequently quoted phrases from the books written by Laozi and Zhuangzi in his book and, in terms of the method to describe also, there are much of Laozi-Zhuangzi styles. Firstly, in the respect of relationship with Laozi, the truths of Buddhism are expressed in Dao and Chongxuan (Twofold Mystery: meaning of mysterious and again mysterious) in many parts of his books. It would be natural that he frequently quoted Laozi and adopted Laozi-style expressions in the respect that there is some commonness between the idea of Laozi and the idea of Buddhism.   Secondly, in the respect of relationship with Zhuangzi, frequent Zhuangzi-style expressions in Wonhyo"s books indicate that he was much influenced from Zhuangzi. In terms of Zhuangzi"s idea on language, it is not so much different from that of Laozi that Dao cannot be expressed, however, the problem whether the language may express in full was reviewed in his idea and this fact is the difference from Wonhyo. As described, Wonhyo adopted Laozi-Zhuangzi idea and used it in expression of his idea. At this point, the inclusive pose of Wonhyo may be understood and, in terms of whole history of idea, influential relationship between Buddhism and traditional idea may be found.
