This thesis takes the side of belief in Avaloki?svara through the analysis of Avaloki?svara Icon in Chosun dynasty. And I sort out the types and transformation of the paintings. This bodhisattva knows as an incarnation of mercies, assists Amit?bha and helps rebirth in the Pure Land. Avaloki?svara, the typical of Mahayana Buddhism, cure our diseases and make our wish come true. Owing to being near at hand, these facts have produce continuously more believers. Buddhism paintings symbolize contents of belief in the contemporary period, or they try to lead us to Buddhism. Through the analysis of the Icons, I can access what the types of the contemporary Avaloki?svara belief is. Avaloki?svara Icon also shows that characteristics in Chosun Buddhism are ritual and popular. My main materials cited here are those collected by Institute of SungboMunwhajae(聖寶文化財硏究院). With my special concern I have analyzed Avaloki?svara Icon as next to Sakyamuni platform painting and Amit?bha platform painting. The number of paintings are 63 of the former and 109 of the latter. Finally Chosun Buddhist Painting is broader and more various image than the Koryo"s. It is the result that popular and broader belief in Avaloki?svara is accepted.
