Korean students should bring to their study of English poetry an awareness of two traditions in their own poetry culture, one a tradition to be read and contemplated, the other a tradition to be sung and heard. Korean poetry is concept-image centred rather than word (sound) centred; it has tended to place more emphasis on technique than on craft and to understand craft in terms radically different to the English tradition. Differences in the perceived nature of poetry discourse make it difficult for Korean students to approach English poetry.
