This paper deals with how to approach one of the most complex texts in 20th-century American literature. It offers an introductory guide for reading and teaching The Sound and the Fury, a text widely taught at the undergraduate level in Korea. Tracing the major thematic concerns and the innovative narrative structure of the novel, this paper focuses closely on how Faulkner tells the story of the Compson family (or the history of the decline of a southern family/the old South) in different perspectives: 3 brothers', each in his own limited mind, and the 4th section, the author's own objective view. Here, not only do I attempt to grasp the private traumatic landscapes of 3 brothers in their dealing with the loss of Caddy, but I also discuss the significance of Caddy and race issue in the novel. Finally I think about how to contextualize the text, its gender and race issue in particular, within a Korean pedagogical scene, hoping to stimulate critical dialogue within the community of Faulkner studies in Korea.
