The Prospect of the study on Abroad studying monks in ancient korea

  Ⅰ. Direction of Project   Buddhism introduced to China around in A.D century. China developed Buddhism as an sectarian character such as Hwa-yen, Tien-Tai, Vinaya and Zen. Korea accepted Buddhism in late 4th century. The first period of abroad studying monks are Seung-rang, Won-gwang and Chi-myung during the 5th to 7th century. The latest groups are Ui-chon, Bo-woo, and Na-wong which studied in China till 14th century. Most of the Korean monks studied about Tantritic Buddhism, Yogacara, Saddharma pundarika, Avatamsaka and Zen.   The aim of research point out the footprints of their study and field survey of old temples. How do they contribute the academic and discipline of Buddhism?   Ⅱ. The Roles and characteristics of Korean monks to China Buddhism   The Monks who studied abroad has those contribution to Korean Buddhism.   Firstly Spread of Neo- Buddhism. Korean Buddhism has a strong character of Mahayana tradition which flew into abroad study monks.   Secondly Cultural Exchange through Buddhism. At the same time, China influenced by Korean monks such as Won-hyo. Ui-Sang, etc.   Thirdly Diplomatic function, The tri angle of peninsula makes political conflict between Korea, China and Japan. The ancient time, most of the diplomatic function provided by Buddhist priests.   In this context, we can study for those theme which give us the academic researching needs.   ① Ui-sang and Chinese Hwa-yen sect   ② Won-hyo"s influence to China Buddhism   ③ Seung-rang and Chinese Madhyamika school   ④ The difference of Won-chik and Chinese yogacara school   ⑤ Hye-cho and Tantric Buddhism   ⑥ The korean monks who worked on translating project of the Buddhist cannon   ⑦ Activity of kyo-gak   ⑧ Mu-sang and chinese Zen   ⑨ Won-pyo and northern Zen   ⑩ Che-gwan and Tien-Tai school   By the classical materials of China, Korea and Japan, we can find the 270 priests of abroad study monks. At the same time, we can find 96 Buddhist temple sites of their footprints. This project aims not only the ancient Buddhist exchange of Korea and China but also the creation of friedships of their future development. Specially we stressed on their activity of China and connection of the chinese society. Most of the abroad studying priests returned home land but severals are died in china. The political situation changes their activity but the identity of Buddhist faith endure of the hard circumstances. The Shi-an, Beijing, and Shang hai are the most important area for the abroad studying of the Korean monks. Abroad study monks contribute the academic development of Korea and China. Also the renew of arts, culture and their identity too. Korea, China, Japan linked with Buddhism as an Golden belt.
