This study has examined four categories of ?amatha-vip a?yan?-?lambana(止觀所緣) and various types of ?amathavipa?yan?( 止觀) written in the Sa?dhinirmocana-s?tra-so (解深密經疏). The commentary of the Sa?dhinirmocana-s?t ra(解深密經) shows that the four categories of ?amatha-vip a?yan?-?lambana is actually vy?py-?lambana(遍滿所緣) am ong the following "four ?lambana"(catur-?lambana,四種所 緣),i.e.,vy?py-?lambana(遍滿所緣), carita-vi?odanam-?lamba na(淨行所緣), kau?aly?lambana(善巧所緣) and vi?uddha-??la -?lambana(淨戒所緣) demonstrated in the writings of the y og?c?ra(瑜伽行派). It also exhibits the comprehensive struc ture of the four categories by clearly articulating them as a sub-structure of ?lambana. As the counterpart of ?amatha-vipa?yan?-?lambana in t he Sa?dhinirmocana-s?tra, catur-?lambana consists of savi kalpam-?lambanam(有分別影像),nirvikalpam-?lambana(無分 別影像), vastu-paryanta(事邊諦), and k?ta-kara??yat?(所作成辦) and can be understood from the commentary as follows; 1) savikalpam-?lambanam is a stage of ?lambana where the image of colour becomes strong with vikalpa(分別), arising and the action of praj?a(慧, wisdom) becomes weak while the action of vipa?yan? becomes overshadowed by kle?a(煩惱). 2) nirvikalpam-?lambana is a state where the image of colour still lingers and the action of ?amatha becomes stro ng while judgement is weak. 3) vastu-paryanta is a stage of ?lambana in which wher e wisdom is always active after a mastery of principles of tatath?(眞如) and truth. 4) k?ta-kara??yat? is a stage where praj?a(慧) and bodh i(菩堤) are achieved, nirvana is reached by severing agonie s, and ultimately the universe manifests itself as it is. The commentary recognizes all existing theories about t he ir relationship to da?a-bh?mi(十地) but calls for a need for further discussion on the assertion that there exist catu r-?lambana at the stage of Budhahood. This study has also found that the explanation about vi pa?yan? and ?amatha of a??u-dhy?na(八定) as main types of ?amatha-vipa?yan? is all related to catur-?lambana and is also associated with types of catur-vidha-vipa?yan?(四 種毘鉢舍那).
