The Problems of the Children Exposed to Family Violence and Social Welfare Counterplan

&nbsp;&nbsp;The purpose of this study is to provide the foundation for the legal and institutional system to prevent and intervene the problems of the children exposed to family violence. It examines the prevalence and the problems of those children. A survey was conducted 400 mothers of elementary school children in Seoul and Daejoun. In addition, an interview was conducted 34 children in domestic violence shelters.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The results of this study were as follows. First, the largest proportion (41.2%) of mothers experienced verbal violence, followed by minor physical violence (25%), and severe physical violence (5.5%). And 11.8% of children in the community witnessed parental violence and over 90% of children in the shelter witnessed parental violence. Second, exposure to family violence had strong negative influences on children’s adjustment including emotional, behavioral and social area. The children who have been exposed to violence showed emotional difficulties and aggressive behaviors as well as low social adaptative skills comparing to the children who were not exposed to family violence.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Based on these results, this study offers various suggestions to supplement legal, social and economical systems and to improve the intervention methods to alleviate the problems of the children exposed to family violence.
