The present study aims to analyse the state of cultural aspects in university-level EFL (English as a Foreign Language) textbooks, and to identify teachers" opinions on cultural elements in those textbooks. The analysis indicated that international textbooks did not include aspects of the students" own Korean culture, which intercultural communication stresses. In the case of in-house, i.e., locally published, textbooks, they lacked the cultural contents of non-English countries, compared to international textbooks. A survey results from 68 English teachers at universities in Korea revealed that both native and Korean teachers agreed to the importance of cultural instruction in English education. They also indicated that the cultural contents that they considered necessary to generate intercultural and cross-cultural awareness were not included in any of the textbooks, and if they were, it required supplementing. Based on these results, it is suggested that, to make more culturally appropriate textbooks, considerable cooperation from both native and Korean teachers is required. Moreover, the identification of students" opinions, interests, and cultural awareness are required to produce better textbooks.
