The world airline industry is undergoing major structural changes at this moment. Most consumers prefer to fly with a large airline which has an extensive international network. This preference has induced airlines to establish global networks in order to attract more passengers in the increasingly competitive international markets. However, it is difficult for a single airline to create a truly global network. Therefore, major airlines have been extending their service networks primarily via strategic alliances with other airlines as a means of forming global service networks. Alliances may provide opportuinities to reduce costs by coordinating activities and afford to benefits of joint use of ground facilities, codesharing, coordination of fight schedule.
