The purpose of this study is to provide the present situation and the development of strategic alliances in the container shipping companies The capacity of the fleets of the Top 25 operators has grown by 12.3% during the year 2003, which is in line with the average Top 25 growth rate observed since 1997. The five largest carriers alone concentrate 35% of the capacity effectively deployed on liner trades. One of the most significant developments in the container shipping industry over the last decade has been the formation of strategic alliances and equity partnerships. The cooperation that have evolved have been quite complex, and in some cases companies have merged through acquisition and then joined larger alliances, or have entered an alliance, only later to merge. In the container shipping industry, there have been a number of multinational mergers. Affecting a broader cross-section of the industry have been the establishment of global alliances, of which five are the most important : Grand Alliance(Hapag-Lloyd, NYK Line, OOCL, P&O Nedlloyd), New World Alliance(APL, HMM, MOL), CKYH Alliance( COSCO, K-Line, Hanjin, Yang Ming), Maersk-Sealand, Evergreen Line/Hatsu Marine/Lloyd Triestino.
