Gang So-Cheon has written a number of children’s verses and songs after he started his carrier as the story author since his work “Willow Fruits” was accepted in 1931. In 1939, since he has published the fairy tale “A Stone” written closely similar to the children’s verse in style on the Dong-A Ilbo, he wrote numerous stories for children as the fairy tale author and contributed to the promotion of the status of the Korean juvenile literature. The author aimed for the bright future by realizing the mental dreams in a virtual space. Thus, he pursued literatures that can give the children the dreams and hopes through the imaginary world even in the painful reality of suffering and loss due to the colonial government and the war. In this respect, this paper aims at the study on the internal characteristics of his stories by analyzing the subject, the structure and the style. The study was limited to 50 volumes of short and long fairy tales which are considered to fit for the elementary course. Chapter Ⅱ deals with the lifetime and the literature activities of the author as the basic research, and Chapter Ⅲ examines the literary works of the author. Main discussion and conclusion is summarized as below:
First, the subject of his stories is considered to be the discovery of love, the conquest of loss through the hopes, the pursuit of dreams, and the moral instructions.
Secondly, the structure of his stories tries to reveal the intention of the author through the circulating structure along the realitydream-reality in the interesting fashion. The structure of the loss and the overcoming seeks for the valuable object and the fantastic world is realized by use of the transformation, to thus pursue the logic of coexistence with others.
Thirdly, the style of his stories is divided into the fluent sentence, the poetic sentence, and the use of the allegories. According to the result of the research, the fluent sentence makes readers to feel the rhythm and the speed to thus provide the readers with more pleasure and enhance the vitality. The delicate and fine description, and the poetic sentence such as metaphoric expression make up the fantastic and poetic atmospheres throughout his works. The use of the allegories symbolizes the subject of the stories and thus contributes to the impressive representation of the author’s intention.
Fourthly, the significance of his stories is investigated in view of the history of the juvenile literature.
