This paper aims to study the modern women"s sijo. Literature mirrors the society where it is produced, and it changes as the society changes. As a genre of literature, sijo has been through the stages of birth, growth and decline in the course of Korean history, reflecting Korean societies during all those days. As for the origin of sijo, scholars views vary widely accepted theory today is that sijo is develoed from Silas hangga(local song). Then, this unique literary genre has been with Korean people for more than a thousand years. Polished and refined for so long a time to fit the language and emotion of Korean people, sijo has now achieved the structure and form Koreans enjoy today.<BR> Modern sijo is a term made to differentiate it from old sijo. It is also a useful term in distinguishing it from free poetry or the sijo which is sung as a song. It still relatively unknown exactly when sijo was born and how. what is better known is when and how mordern sijo came to have the form and popularity taht it enjoys today. The development of sijo in the early 20th century is greatly indebted by the ealy modern wrters.<BR> The writer concerned in this study is as follows in the twenties. Kim il Yup who covered all genre, and in the thirties, Kim Oh Nam, Jang Jung Sim, Oh Sin Hye as sijo writer. Start female modern sijo literature is written by Kim Il Yup. What has been examined can be summerized as follows. Kim Il Yup published sijo on Buddhism, differentiated from the songs of humanistic love in her earlier sijo. Especially, she was devoted to making literary the religious statements in her experiential, confessioal reminiscences. The development of modern women"s sijo in the early 20th century is greatly indebted by Kim Il Yup.
