Teacher training program for improving teacher talk through script writing

  Although Ministry of Education made efforts to develop language ability of English teachers for the last 10 years, English classroom showed lack of natural communication between teachers and students. This current study describes an training program which aims to improve the quality of teacher talk in English classroom by writing scripts and its analysis. The program was focused on language awareness and skill-specific training: teachers examined their talk patterns they currently used and considered how other types of talk could benefit their instructional practices. Teachers were trained by the step-wise procedures: Problem awareness by self reflection, script writing of teacher talk, mini-lesson transaction, recording & transcription, error analysis, and reflection For the purpose, retrospective methods were used. The data gathered from the trainees" scripts, error analysis, and reflection provided the main evidence for discussion. The data showed evidence of growing awareness on their teacher talk. Finally, ideas for English teacher training program were suggested.
