The purpose of this study is to analyze vocabulary inferencing strategies of elementary school students to infer the meaning of vocabulary from the context. In this study, data was collected from sixth grade students(N=116) in Daejeon, Korea, using a questionnaire and interview. Statistical analysis was performed in SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) to validate the questionnaire. The major findings of this study were as follows. First, those who scored in the top 30% on a vocabulary test more frequently used reasoning strategies than the bottom 30%. Second, the top 30% of scorers used contextual reasoning strategies to infer meaning. Third, there were few differences in strategy use by gender. Fourth, the top 30% of scorers also had a higher perception of and interest in vocabulary learning. On the basis of these findings it is suggested that vocabulary learning strategies can have a significant positive effect on the vocabulary learning of EFL students. Further study is necessary to discover and help elementary students apply vocabulary learning strategies more actively and to become effective English vocabulary learners.
