Glutaredoxins (Grxs) are thioloxidoreductases required for maintaining thiol/disulfide equilibrium in living cells. In this work, the Grx3 gene, encoding one of the three plausible monothiol Grxs from the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, was characterized. The cloned Grx3 gene has biological functions, and accelerated growth rate of the S. pombe cells. S. pombe monothiol Grx3 was enhanced viability of the yeast cells and various stress conditions. These results suggest that S. pombe Grx3 gene may be closely related the yeast"s growth mechanism and plays important functions in response to various rypes of stresses in S. pombe cells.
