Relationships Among Mother"s Parenting Behavior, Children"s Emotional Competence and Self Control

  The present study was to examine mother"s parenting behavior, children"s emotional competence and self control according to mother"s socio-demographic variables and the relationships among mother"s parenting behavior, children"s emotional competence and self control. The subjects of this study were 341 five-year-old children and their mothers in six public kindergartens in the areas of Chongju, Chungju, and Danyang. Questionnaires were used for the measuring mother"s parenting behavior (Hong, 1996), children"s emotional competence (Woo, 2002), and children"s self control (Choi, 2001). Data were analyzed with frequency, mean, standard deviation, t-test, F-test, LSD post hoc test, and Pearson"s correlation coefficient. The results of this study were as follows: First, girl"s emotional expression was higher than boy"s. Children whose mothers are older showed higher empathy and emotional regulation than those whose mothers are younger. Also children whose mothers have a job had higher self emotional recognition than those whose mothers don"t have a job. For self control, boy"s impulsiveness was higher than girl"s. Children whose mothers graduated from college showed higher control than those whose mothers graduated from high school. Second, there were differences in sub-factors of children"s emotional competence and self control among the levels of mother"s parenting behavior. Third, there were significant correlations between children"s emotional competence and self control.
