The purpose of this study is to suggest the ways to make Hanoks, Korean traditional houses, more preferred sites for private lodging, consequently to make them as national cultural goods. For the purpose, present private lodging Hanoks" physical characteristics and management programs were studied, and the needs of tourists were also analyzed. The study surveyed 5 private lodging sites, whose managers were interviewed with questionnaires, and 180 tourists or others answered the questionnaires. The conclusions are as follows. 1) Hanoks currently used as private lodging adopted several facilities in harmony with traditionality, so that not so much inconveniences were answered. 2) The cultural pride of the managers decided the quality of the facilities and services of private lodging Hanoks. 3) Tourists answered physical aspects, distance to urban area and quality of food as priorities when choosing their lodging. The classification of private lodging Hanoks according to their facilities and services is needed for tourist information. The development of cultural programs along with personal services would make tourists visit more frequently. And for an active approach towards tourists from home or abroad, regional management bureaus and internet homepages would be helpful.
