Young Children"s Temperament, Mother"s Personality, and Discipline Style

  The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative importance of children"s temperament and mothers" personality on mothers" discipline style. Subjects of this study were 317 mothers having 5-year-old children drawn from three preschools in Cheongju city. Data were analyzed by SPSSWIN with the method of frequency, percentage, t-test, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression.   The results of this study were as follows: 1. Children"s adjustment, response sensitivity, emotionality, mother"s extroversion & neuroticism were significant factors predicting mother"s supportive discipline. 2. Children"s adjustment, response sensitivity, and mother"s extroversion were significantly associated with mother"s behavioral controlling discipline. 3. Mother"s neuroticism was only significant factor predicting mother"s psychological controlling discipline. 4. There were significant differences the effect of children"s temperament and mother"s personality on maternal discipline style according to children"s sex. For boys, children"s adjustment and response sensitivity, and mother"s extroversion were related to supportive discipline. Children"s response sensitivity and mother"s extroversion were associated with mother"s supportive discipline. Boy"s adjustment and girl"s response sensitivity explained mother"s controlling discipline. Only mother"s neuroticism explained psychological controlling discipline for both boys and girls.
