The Analysis of Women"s Costume of 1920s Appeared in the Movie "The Great Gatsby" and "Chicago"

  The purpose of this study was to compare the women"s costumes of "The Great Gatsby" with those of "Chicago," both of which movies were showing the same social settings though they were produced in different time by almost 30 years. The clothing in the movie "The Great Gatsby" showed romantic and elegant women"s beauty with pastel colors and soft fabrics. It discriminated also against selecting items, colors, and details according to personality. The clothing in the movie "Chicago" which expressed sexy and gorgeous beauty of women showed a dynamic and rhythmic sense with jazz. It used black and white color in order to make impressive contrast and elegance, and it created the gorgeous beauty with red color. The silhouette was emphasized by the body line, the deep neckline, the short skirt, and the beads decorations that played an important role to inspire visual effect rather than reflecting the mode of the era. The clothing of 1920s was expressed in the form of romantic and elegant beauty of "The Great Gatsby", and also the gorgeousness and sexy beauty of "Chicago". In actuality, these factors appeared in the movies seemed to have some differences from the actual clothing of 1920s.
