The Effects of Picture-Dictionary Making Activities on the Development of English Vocabulary Skills in Elementary School Students

  The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of picture-dictionary making activities on the development of English vocabulary skills for elementary school students. To achieve this purpose, two. research questions are examined. First, what effect does picture-dictionary making activities have on the improvement of vocabulary skills. Second, what effect does picture-dictionary making activities have on learning attitudes toward studying English. The subjects are two classes of 3rd grade students in J elementary school : one class is an experimental group and the other, the control group. The experimental group works with the researcher in making picture-dictionaries, while the control group learns the vocabulary with the researcher by using CD-Roms. The results of this study indicate that picture-dictionary making activities provide significant effects on the development of vocabulary skills. Moreover, this activity also shows significant change in English learning attitudes in elementary school students. Especially, the picture-dictionary making activity causes significant effects in students in the low proficiency level.
