On the Methods of Making the Materials for Linguistic Forms Based on the Proficiency Level of Learners : Chiefly on Progressive Forms

  The purposes of this study are to review a proficiency-based program in the 7th national curriculum, to analyse the learn ability of the progressive forms by observing actual teaching practices through videotapes in primary school, and to present the effective methods of making teaching-learning materials for English progressive forms based on the proficiency level of learners. The study is based on an experiment in which subjects were analysed on progressive forms. The results showed that CD-ROM in classroom enabled students to use progressive forms, and students could use the progressive forms in describing about familiar things. However, learners did not recognize when or how to use the progressive forms appropriately. The typical errors are an ungrammatical use of that form and an incorrect usage of simple tenses instead of progressive forms. To facilitate learner awareness of the form and the meaning of the progressive, it is needed that a grammatical correct and an appropriate use of that form are exemplified systematically in the teaching-learning materials based on the proficiency level of learners. In this study, it is suggested that a wide range of methods need to be included in making the teaching-learning materials for linguistic forms based on the proficiency level of learners.
