  The purpose of this study is to examine the effective ways to teach English pronunciation to elementary school students. Explicit and implicit approaches to pronunciation was applied to determine which is more appropriate according to students" developmental stages. Two classes of 6th graders in G elementary school in Cheong-ju were selected for this experimental study. To examine the effectiveness of the two approaches, an independent sample t-test was executed. To compare the quantitative results of the different kind of questions, a paired sample t-test was executed. It was difficult to implement a differentiated explicit and implicit approach to each class teaching pronunciation. Explicit approach was a little new to elementary students, but it can stimulate students" self confidence and motivations to learn English. This study suggests that more emphasis be placed on English phoneme perception activities accompanied by global comprehension activities, which can also contribute to the improvement of communicative competence.
