Classical conditioning of the rabbit"s nictitating membrane response with long intertrial interval: forward, simultaneous, and backward conditioning

  There has been an apparent discrepancy between the theorethical view that backward conditioning does not occur and the experimental evidence which suggests that it does.   In this experiment, the effect of foreward, simultaneous, and backward conditioning were studied in very long intertrial interval paradigm of nictitating membrane response of rabbit.   Conditioned stimulus duration was 1100 msec and unconditioned stimuls was 100 msec, The animals were sutured one day prior to the two-day adaptation session. The acquisition session consisted of one trial/day for fifteen days. And then, extinction session was followed for five days.   Empirical evidences were obtained in the forward and simultaneous conditioned groups, but not in the backward group.
