The Effect of Food Restriction and Rehabilitation on Brain Growth and Behavior in Rats

  This study was designed to investigate the rehabilitating process of the rats fed foods limitlessly after interrupting the body weight gain by giving 2 to 4 grams of foods for five weeks after weaning.   Experimental groups were compared at the point of same body weight regardless of chronological age.   In learning ability tested by a Y-shaped water maze, there was not significant difference among groups.   The deprived groupsat 7 experimental weeks showed less reaction time, more squares entered in the field, and less number of fecal boli than the nourished in the open field test. However, the deprived groups at 11 weeks did not. Therefore, above findings support the content that retarded brain growth and performance by dietary restriction in weanling rats can be restored.
