The author tried in this essay to study and examine the method of fostering children during the Yi Dynasty period, with the contents of Dongmong seonsub(童蒙先習 1541), Kyokmong Yogyol(擊蒙要訣 1577), Sasojol(士小節 1775) and Koam Kahoon(顧菴家訓, 1886) ets as the main point of study and to pursue the meaning of the traditional education of our country by means of reviewing the aforementioned books on the rearing and education of children from the modernistic point of view. Then, the contents of the textbooks for children were analyzed and examined in general, thus reaching a conclusion that : Inryum(人倫) education refers to the education on the mutual roles to be played in the relationships between fathers and sons, husbands and wives, the young and old and between the lord and vassals. During the Chosun(=Yi) Dynasty period, human roles rela ted to moral principles were valued highly by the people, and reciprocal roles to be played faith fully in these relationships were stre ssed and encouraged in the daily life. Thus, such phrases as Buja Yuchin(父子有親 Intimacy between fathers and sons), Bubu Yu byol(夫婦有別 Distinction between bus bands and wives), Changyu Yuso(長幼有序 Senionity order between the old and young) were mottos thought very highly of those days. Although it has to be admitted that the roles to be performed by the inferiors toward the superiors were stressed somewhat unilaterally that is, upwards form below most of the cases, the real value of the teachings itself should be considered very meaning ful As a result of analysis and review in the above, we came to conclude that emphasis was placed on the education pertaining to the identity and subjectivity of man during be Chosun period. Judging from the educational point of view in modern times, however, the writer is in favor of the opinion that the core of moral principles taught during the Chosun period is a precious data that has to be handed down to us correctly.
