A Study on the Aspects of Narrative Media"s Transformation -focused on The French Lieutenant"s Woman and Seopyeonje

  There are many types of narrative in the world. Narrative is a kind of communication. Mankind has created various ways for communication of stories so far.   The aim of this study is to research The French Lieutenant"s Woman and Seopyeonje in the view point narrative"s adaptation from a novel for a film. This analysis is on the premise that "story" and "discourse" of narrative can be divided. This study is to analyse narrative focusing on discourse of narrative medias, and it can be a clue to figure out the form of each media.   In the process of adaptation from the novel The French Lieutenant"s Woman and Seopyeonje for the film The French Lieutenant"s Woman and Seopyeonje, the contents and the main subjects are hardly changed. Yet there a wide difference between the novels" form and the film"s form to express contents and subjects. This research is to figure out the difference.   The main topics of discussion are followings. First topic is omission and abridgement of the plot. The plot of the novel is omitted and abridged in the film for the basic reason that discourse time of a form is limited. The appropriate omission and abridgement makes the film maintain dramatic tension from start to finish.   In Short The French Lieutenant"s Woman and Seopyeonje has been evaluated a good example of successful adaptation from a novel for a film. Therefore it is useful to study on the aspects of adaptation in detail because we can learn essence and characteristics of each narrative media through the research.
