This essay aims to explore the methodology of teaching American novel according to students" grade/level and investigate how the teachers of American novel can achieve this methodology effectively. For this purpose, examining the teaching methodology I divide the students into three groups: freshman and sophomore; junior and senior; graduate student. This article discusses the texts, films, student"s responses, and several issues and problems teachers might be faced with while teaching each group.<BR> For this purpose, I sometimes interrogate my teaching experiences and methodologies including the use of texts and the topics of the class. Especially I examine Edgar Allen Poe"s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” James Baldwin"s “Sonny"s Blues,” Mark Twain"s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, James Fenimore Cooper"s The Last of the Mohicans, and antinomian controversy to prove the methodology I present in this article. This essay ultimately attempts to search for new methodology of teaching American novel by encouraging other teachers to participate in this discussion.
