The Study on Romantic Illumination in Hae In Sa Phal Man Tae Jang Kyeng In Yu

  Buddhism, which flourished from the fourth to the fourteenth centenary as the state religion, give rise to religious tales and lives of famous priests and their miracles. Among the generally known is the anonymous, Hae In Sa Phal Man Tae Jang Keyong In yu (海印寺八萬大藏經因由), believed to have been in its present from sometime during the reign of king Sun jong (1089-1098). The book was published in Hae in Temple, main Temple of holy Buddhist, is located Hap Chun Gun Kyung Nam province, was established in August 802 AD, three years after King Ai Jang(哀莊王), the 40th of the Shilla dynasty had been enthroned, monk Soon Eung(順應). The book reveals in realistic language power of the King of Hell and urges living beings to become devote believers in the religion. In plot and technique, this is a short story. Wood block used for printing it are preserved in the Hae in Temple.   Then in the first Koryo dynasty, story collector were lower hired by the court to gather anecdote and strange stories circulating among the people to be used as reference material for adminstration. In the Koryo dynasty, from the last of the Shilla dynasty, story collecting become a vogue, Tang (唐) chuan chi (傳奇), and sung and yuan collection of stories, were encouraged to father monks from among their own believer for Buddhist tale. Consider Tae Jang Kyiung In Yu, which shows a definite advance in the development of stories, is the Buddhist Chuan chi, which is worthy to Choi Chie Won chon (崔致遠傳) in Sui chon (殊異傳), in which the writer speaks though the dreams of Lee Geo in (李居仁) publishment of wooden printing blocks and the King of Hell"s desire. This story occupy a last Shilla Dynasty and early Koyro Dynasty period in which anecdotes and legends paved the real fiction. This work used to technique of dream chiefly as a vehicle of Buddhist"s dearest wish. From a Buddhist"s point of view, unlike a Confucianist"s, both this world and the other world belonged to the larger Buddhist world and hence were more less equal members of the worldwide Buddhist community. An essential part of Tae Jang Kyeng In Yu pan shows, too, was a Buddhist holy land, the sacred ground of many of the Buddha"s earlier incarnation.   We can perhaps better see the difference in technique and contents between the Tae Jang Kyeng In Yu and the other Buddhist stories by examining how they deal with a common subject. What marks the work os extraordinary are the vividly recreated episode of Lee Geo in"s dream, during which Buddhist were called upon so often to lead to Koryo nation in times of extreme crisis. We have mentioned that the Tae Jang Kueng In Yu marks the stage of the novel in the literary history of Koryo Dynasty, besides being an outstanding example of the tales of the Buddhist marvelous tradition.
