This study attempts to investigate what characteristics are found in the speech production produced by Korean elementary school students in terms of accuracy and fluency. Two different proficiency groups (lower vs. intermediate) took the ESPT junior test and their responses were measured by the number of error-free clauses, the number and length of pauses, the number of c-units, the number of fillers, and the number of repetitions. The results show that the lower level students produced less error-free clauses and c-units than the intermediate group of students. The lower group paused more frequently and for much longer periods than the intermediate group. Also, the findings reveal that there are significant differences between the two groups in regard to the number of pauses and c-units. The number of fillers and repetitions do not contribute to the distinction between the two groups. The author argues that both groups still need to improve their accuracy and fluency.
