This study examines whether prison inmate"s disciplinary punishment is a consequence of his/her rule violation which is, in turn, a consequence of low self-control or a consequence of labeling which is given to inmate whose social status is low. This study also tests the impact of opportunity which is another independent variable at the self-control theory(Gottfredson and Hirschi, 1990) on the disciplinary punishment with a sample of prison inmates. The results are strongly supportive of the self-control theory, showing that inmate"s level of self-control affects rule-violating behaviors at prison, which increases the chance of being imposed of disciplinary punishment. As the self-control theory claimed, opportunity variable(length of imprisonment) is also related to the dependent variable. On the other hand, labeling theory does not appear to explain prison inmate"s disciplinary punishment. Specifically, incarcerated offender"s disciplinary punishment experience is not explained by their low social status.
