We must respect children"s liberty in educational practices so that children can obtain the abilities for exercise of liberty and realize their rational life plans in future. In this respect, children"s liberty in education is regarded as contributing to the acquisition of social competencies by socialization and development of autonomy. In short, children can elevate the worth of liberty and autonomous choice by schooling.
But in schooling, if restrictions of children"s liberty can enlarge the worth of liberty and conditions for exercise of liberty in future lives, it may be justified by the general priciple of liberty. As rights of liberty must not conflict with other goods such as respect for others" interests, equality, and rationality in practical discourse, so children"s rights of liberty in educational activities must be compatible with other educational values. And the limitations of children"s liberty in education must be based on the justification rule of freedom and on the educational justification. In fact, because of the individual differences of educational achievements and the alteration of general good, we cannot regard the principle of general good as a good criterion of paternalistic intervention. We must highly evaluate the long-term interests of children and future opportunities rather than immediate desire, short-term happiness, and present interests of children.
In short, we can choose one educational policy between paternalistic intervention for developing future autonomy and the exercise of children"s liberty necessary to the choosing actiivities in educational practices. But the rational policy for children"s liberty cannot be determined by general principle or one policy. It is an empirical and individual problem.
