I surveyed value and perceptual judgement of physique of 1599 college students(male 918, female 681) for the six months from June 1993 through November 1993, The survey contained the following: 1) Sex and age, 2) recent physique(height and weight), 3) value and perceptual judgement of one"s own physique, 4) want for one"s own physiue, and 5) physique that one assumes to be national averages of his own age, and ideal physique.
The results from the survey are as follows:
1. physiques
1) The height and weight of college students are greater than the national average height and weight of each age group.
2) As for value and perceptual judgement of their present physique, college students of each age group tend to think that they are short buy heavy
3) As for their physique, college students of each age group want to get more tall but less heavy than now.
4) The assumed national averages of each age group are close to the real national averages:however, the height is a little higher while the weight is a little lower.
5) As for ideal physique of each age group, the height is greater than students" present height or the national average, while the weight is lower:their ideal physique are close to the height and weight studints want to have.
2. Physique based on value and perceptual judgement
1) To compare 5 divisions of value and perceptual judgement and 5 levels of objective evaluation, it is clear that studints consider themselves to be ‘of the medium’ or ‘short’ in height, and in weight to be ‘fat’ or ‘of the medium’ :they tend to undersetimate their height and overestimate their weight.
2) As for students who judged their height as ‘very tall’, ‘tell’ or ‘of the medium’, their real heights are greater than the national average;on the other hand, those who answered ‘short’ or ‘very short’ ; their heights are lower than the average. As for weight, those who answered ‘very fat’ and ‘fat’ weight much less than the national average.
3) As for the question of how their height want to be, students who consider themselves ‘very tall’ and
‘tall’ want to get less tall than now;those who regard themselves as ‘of the medium’ want either to get taller than now or to stay as they are;and those who think themselves to be ‘short’ or ‘very short’ want to get taller than now.
As for weight, students who consider themselves to be ‘very fat’, ‘fat’ or ‘of the medium’ want to get thin;on the other hand, those who regard themselves as ‘thin’ or ‘very thin’ want to get less thin than now.
4) The assumed national averages of 5 divisions are close to the real national averages:however, the height is a little higher while the weight is a little lower.
5) The ideal heights in 5 divisions are greater than the national averages, while the ideal weights are smaller.
I studied each division of value and perceptual judgement on students" weight and height.
As a result, when a person evaluates his own physique, he uses his own scale he has acquired from his experience, and this scale makes an strong influence on his evaluation.
